Studies on Genetic and Developmental Biological Basis for Improvement of Important Aquaculture Fishes

Fish is important aquaculture resources as required and safety protein source for human being. Two serious problems, such as variety degradation and disease prevalence, have become the restricted factors for sustainable fisheries. This project is addressed to satisfy the urgent nation necessity for modern agriculture and trade after entrance to WTO, and am attempted to change the lagging situation about fish genetic improvement. By large-scale screening and identifying important fish functional genes and molecular markers, some molecular mechanisms on reproduction, growth, disease-resistance and other stress-resistance will be revealed, all of which will form the theoretical base on fish improvement. By developing the technical platform for studying fish functional genomics, some important function genes associated with the economic characters will be isolated and characterized for their signaling pathways and expressional regulation. The main aims are trying to promote advancement for genetics and developmental biology, and to make new contribution for sustainable fisheries. This project is divided into six items: I£© Studies on regulative mechanism for fish reproduction, II£© Studies on molecular mechanism for fish growth regulation, III£© Studies on molecular mechanism and functional genes for disease-resistance in fish, IV£© Studies on gene identification and molecular mechanism for stress-resistant in fish, V£© Isolation of microsatellite markers and the applied basic study on marker-assisted breeding in fish, VI£© Technological studies on rapid and directional breeding in fish.
