Modern science and technology have greatly improved human recognition on the material world and society, extended human behavior and organ, and profoundly affected human society. However, the problems of effectively and efficiently sharing information and knowledge still remain unsolved.
The Internet and World Wide Web are milestones in the history of information sharing, but it is still far from meeting the needs of complex applications and effective sharing of information and knowledge due to the lack of semantic ability.
Traditional relational data models and theories have realized normal organization and management of data, cultivated three Turing awards, and produced a tremendous software industry. However, it is not applicable to realize effective sharing and management of Internet resources. Current application demands draw great technology innovations. Semantic Grid is an important direction of technology evolution.
Ineffective information sharing widely exists in our information society, which has become a bottleneck of the development of our information society. According to our country¡¯s requirement, rules of nature, society and information technology, we propose a Semantic Grid model as a solution to this bottleneck issue. It can normally reorganize, effectively share, dynamically cluster and fuse, and intelligently use various geographically distributed resources and support cooperation. It adopts the basic principles of modern system theory, absorbs the essence of Internet and relevant technologies, and introduces new computing paradigms and resource organizing models.
This project mainly solves three key problems: normal reorganization of network resources, semantic interconnections, and intelligent clustering. This research team will endeavor to explore and develop fundamental theory, model, method and key technologies on Semantic Grid. They aim at developing a series of theories and methods on multi-level semantic interconnection, intelligent clustering, and intelligent interconnection environment and tools for effective sharing and managing network resources, and applying to economy, culture, education, medicine, defense, public services domains in order to realize effective use of information and knowledge resources among different domains.
According to the requirement of our information society development, this project will focus on the following eight topics: 1) Theory, model, method, and tool on resource space model; 2) Process semantics, verification theory and service integration on Semantic Grid; 3) Semantic-Grid-based semantic association model and management and communication platform; 4) Resource description model, formalization theory and support technology on Semantic Grid and its application in bioinformatics; 5) Semantic-Grid-based knowledge supply theory and technology; 6) Application of Semantic Grid in Chinese traditional medicine; 7) Semantic-based information retrieval, integration and its application in travel; and 8) Semantic-based service coordination and management.
We will propose internationally influential fundamental theories and models, provide with theories, methods, standards, key technologies and software tools to solve common problems in multiple application domains with significant social and economic benefits, obtain patents on critical technologies and software copyrights, cultivate excellent young researchers, form an international innovation team, and push the development of relevant disciplines.
